How to convert minutes to decimal hours

Decimal hours express minutes as a fraction of an hour, so payroll can multiply by an hourly rate. The rule is simple: divide the minutes by 60. To convert a full time like 8 hours 45 minutes, keep the whole hours and add the minute fraction.

Worked example. 45 minutes ÷ 60 = 0.75. So 8 hours 45 minutes = 8 + 0.75 = 8.75 hours. At $20/hr that's 8.75 × $20 = $175.00 — which you couldn't get by multiplying "8:45" by 20.
