How to add up a military time card

Military time runs on a 24-hour clock — 0000 at midnight to 2359 at one minute before the next midnight — so there's no AM/PM to trip over. To get hours worked, subtract the clock-in from the clock-out and take out unpaid breaks. This calculator does it for the whole week and flags overtime automatically.

Worked example. A shift from 0800 to 1700 with a 30-minute unpaid lunch:
1700 − 0800 = 9 hours, minus 0.5 hour break = 8.5 hours for the day.
An overnight shift from 2200 to 0600 crosses midnight, so add 24 hours: (0600 + 2400) − 2200 = 8 hours.

Why it handles overnight shifts

If your clock-out is a smaller number than your clock-in (for example out at 0600, in at 2200), the shift ended the next day. The calculator detects that and adds 24 hours so graveyard and swing shifts total correctly — a common reason manual time cards come out wrong.

How overtime works

Under the federal FLSA, overtime is time worked beyond 40 hours in a workweek, paid at 1.5× your regular rate. The calculator adds up your week and treats anything past the threshold (40 by default) as overtime. A few states — California, Alaska, Nevada, Colorado — also pay daily overtime after 8 (or 12) hours; if that's you, check your state's rule.

Military time ↔ standard time

To convert a PM time to military time, add 12 to the hour (4:00 PM → 1600). Midnight is 0000 and noon is 1200. Quick reference:

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate hours from military time?

Subtract clock-in from clock-out — military time lets you subtract directly (1700 − 0800 = 9 hours). If clock-out is earlier than clock-in, the shift crossed midnight, so add 24 hours. Then subtract unpaid breaks.

Does it handle overnight (graveyard) shifts?

Yes. When the out time is smaller than the in time, it adds 24 hours, so a 2200→0600 shift totals 8 hours.

How is overtime calculated?

FLSA overtime is hours over 40 in a week at 1.5×. Set the threshold and multiplier above. Some states add daily overtime — check yours.

What is 4:00 PM in military time?

1600. Add 12 to any PM hour; AM hours stay the same (with a leading zero, e.g. 7:00 AM = 0700).
