The rule: 1.5x under the Decent Work Act, 2015
In Liberia the normal working time is 8 hours a day and 48 hours a week. Under the Decent Work Act, 2015 (Part IV), any hour worked beyond that is overtime and must be paid at a rate at least 50% above the normal rate — i.e. 1.5x (150%). By written agreement, overtime may instead be compensated with equivalent paid time off. The maximum overtime an employee may be required to work is 5 hours per week, averaged over a four-month reference period.
Overtime rate table
| Ordinary hour (up to 8/day) | 1.0x |
| Overtime (beyond 8h/day or 48h/week) | 1.5x (150%) |
| Weekly overtime cap | 5 hours |
Worked example
If your hourly rate is $4.00 and you work 2 overtime hours: 2 × $4.00 × 1.5 = $12.00 in overtime pay, added to your ordinary wage. The calculator above totals this for you across the week.
Limits, exemptions and who to contact
Overtime is capped at 5 hours/week. Senior managerial staff and certain categories may be treated differently by their contracts. Complaints about unpaid overtime go to the Ministry of Labour, which can mediate and, if needed, refer the matter to the Labour Court.
